Syncdir -- Synchronize two directories

English | Japanese

(4/16/2002) Version 1.5.3 released. [What's New]

When you install PC-UNIX on your laptop, it is convenient to duplicate (a part of) your home directory on the laptop. There is, however, another problem to make consistency between two home directories.

Syncdir helps the wasteful work and makes consistency based on modification time. Main features are

To synchronize Mail/ directory of MH or Mew, missing files in a new directory can be renamed or deleted in an old directory by specifying explicitly which directory is new. This feature is also convenient to incrementally back up.

Diffdir compares two directories using diff(1). Unlike diff -r, you can specify ignored filenames and directories.

I'm sure to work on FreeBSD, Linux, Solaris, SunOS, Digital UNIX and IRIX. however I guess it can work on a large majority of UNIXes.

(*1) To undo, syncdir does file operations in the reverse order that the last syncdir does since syncdir does not register a set of files. It is assumed there is no file operation that violates undoing after the last syncdir. Before version 1.3.7, the modification time of files restored by diff files is the time of restoring, so the succeeding syncdir results in unexpected updating new files by the corresponding old files. However, after version 1.3.8, this problem is fixed by restoring the modification time also.
